In Hyde Park and Kenwood, more than 20 000 voters turnout with line waits of one to three hours. Officials attribute delays to high turnout about 70 percent in the Fifth Ward, insufficient machines at some precincts, and the Judges Retention Ballot. Anonymous complaints accuse precinct captains of rushing voters and political pressure affecting voting behavior amid the Carter Mondale race.
Residents and reporters document overflowing trash baskets along 53rd Street near McDonalds and neighboring blocks. McSween, part-owner, pledges to address the litter with on-site cleanup, more baskets, and possible sanitation coordination. Neighbors monitor promised improvements.
Rabbi Ralph Simon, spiritual leader of Rochei Zedek, a major Conservative synagogue, is chosen as 1976 State of Israel Bond Man of the Year. He has led the 102 year old congregation 33 years and chaired major Jewish fund drives in Chicago.
Frances Van Dervoort reports a theft targeting Sarah Deshazer whose green car was broken into at the fire station corner of 55th Street and University Avenue. A family heirloom hammer with a long head and worn red handle was taken, trusted to locate the item and return it toDeshazer.
