CAP asks Hyde Park markets not to sell ecologically harmful products

Hyde Park CAP launches a two part effort to curb pollution and waste from supermarket practices. The group targets colored paper products excess packaging and phosphates in detergents and seeks store participation to promote returnable bottle brands. Harvey Asher of Co op Supermarket approves CAP signs by soft drink displays.

Police district hosts business crime prevention workshop

The 21st police district sponsors a 7:30 p.m. workshop at the Blackstone Branch library 4904 S. Lake Park on preventing business crime with speakers Samuel Bray Continental bank and Sgt. Arthur Paholke of the Chicago Police Department. Bus pickups for Hyde Park residents leave at 7:00 55th and Lake Park and 7:15 53rd and Woodlawn. CAP pamphlets by Alice Ostrow and Trish Poo promoting ecologically sound products will be distributed at shopping centers this week. CAP seeks Lakefront Bill of Rights passage in the Senate.

Hyde Park residents vow action to curb crime on 53rd Street

Fifth ward committeeman Marshall Korshak urged residents to curb harassment of women along 53rd Street and to investigate the Baroque tavern, named as a crime hotspot. He noted window breakages at his office and suggested lack of safe youth spaces fuels trouble. A police rep urged reporting incidents. The discussion pointed to high rents and social isolation as contributing factors.

Suggested program to curb Kenwood loitering near high school

A plan discussed by Kenwood High school community members and police would have patrol cars check IDs of people looking suspicious around the school. Officers would use discretion and not overemphasize ID checks, focusing on nonstudents. The measure mirrors a program at Martin Luther King High and aims to reduce gang recruitment while keeping the area open to legitimate activity. Feedback will go to the juvenile protection committee of the Kenwood PTSA and interested groups.
