Garden Fair showcases trees and herbs at Hyde Park event
Hyde Park Kenwood Community Conference hosts its 14th annual Garden Fair from 9 am to 6 pm Friday May 18 and 9 am to 4 pm Saturday May 19 at New Hyde Park Shopping Center mall 55th Street and Lake Park Avenue. The expanded vegetable section features cauliflower broccoli eggplant onions brussels sprouts celery and traditional tomatoes cucumbers peppers cabbage. New to the fair are flowering crab trees and dwarf fruit trees including apple peach plum cherry apricot and pear. Herbs such as parsley marjoram oregano rosemary thyme sage wormwood woodruff burnet hyssop and catnip will be sold along with 60 varieties of perennials and many annuals. Indoor plants include succulents cacti ferns and ivy. Currant blueberry gooseberry and raspberry plants appear with vines shrubs and evergreens. Changing baskets in terra cotta plastic and wire with sphagnum moss will be prepared by Garden Fair Committee members. Compost demonstrations by Shoesmith School students follow supervision by District 14 educator David Garlovsky. The Blackstone Chicago Public Library will host a portable gardening book booth run by Steve Metzger. Potting soil and sphagnum moss were bagged by youths at the Chicago Association for Retarded Children's sheltered workshop. Council blocks gas station at 55 Cornell site
Hyde Park area leaders and residents opposed a DUR sale of the 55th and Cornell lot to Rene Farina for a gas station. The City Council overrode a DUR board OK given in 1970 and shelved the project after a public hearing. Several community groups had opposed the plan and urged low-density housing instead.

Gateway House to Hold Fourth Graduation Ceremony
