Ancona school students march and brandish picket signs as city crews tear up sidewalks for drainage and new gas and sewage lines. Peggy Coon says Urban Renewal plans include shorter sidewalks and closer to the building, affecting bus unloading. Alderman Claude Holman intervenes to restore original sidewalk condition.
Hyde Park Kenwood Community Conference starts phase one of its membership campaign next week seeking more active members. Kate Williams, campaign chair, notes a May 30 deadline and a May 24 cut for news and ads. The drive will cluster neighborhoods to gather feedback and culminate in an October all community event.
The University of Chicago will not overhaul its security system after a dormitory rape in Snell Hall. Officials cite a large mobile force as most effective, noting the current force is the fourth largest police body in Illinois and operates around the clock with patrols bounded by 48th to 61st streets and Lake Michigan. Slight changes to Snell Hall locks have been made, while student opinions range from support for tighter controls to insistence on balancing safety with freedom.
The University of Chicago shooting last week of a mother Alice Monroe and her son Robert was a hired killing. Julian Levi of the South East Chicago Commission said witnesses’ statements led to the investigation. Four suspects Glenn Riley Oscar Gill Nathaniel Brown and Charles Boulden face attempted murder charges with $20 000 bond. A separate murder case saw a key witness charged with perjury and Leonard Barbour aka Michael Thigpen indicted for perjury and obstruction of justice with related custody updates.
