Ruth Knight previews the 3rd Kenwood Open House with a Saturday tour from Isaiah Temple. Homes along Kimbark and Greenwood showcase Tudor English interiors, English oak paneling, a 25 by 15 pool, and private Madison Park. The event runs 2 to 5 p.m. at the Isaiah Temple.
Ruth Knight and Roberta lead Hyde Park High seniors in a feature about school awards activities and journalism. Fifteen Hyde Park area youths produced the second Kids Issue of the Hyde Park Herald, printed in Des Plaines Illinois with direction from co editors Bobbe Feldstein and Ruth Knight.
Registration Week in Chicago Public Schools ends May 11. Principals must inform parents in their districts about registering children for the 1956 semester. Children born before November 12, 1956 by age limits won’t join kindergarten or first grade until February 1957. Students must attend their resident district unless granted an out of district permit. Birth certificates cost 1 dollar from the Board of Health. If born outside Cook County, certificates from the birth county. A pamphlet Starting to Kindergarten is available at the District Office.
The Land Clearance Commission last week gained control of eight more options, bringing total properties to 117. New acquisitions include 5475-77 Harper, 5501-15 Lake Park, 1535-37 Ingleside, and 5530-32 Harper, and options on 5412-18 Lake Park, 5481 Blackstone, 5430-32 Lake Park, and 5466-68 Kenwood.
The Community Conservation Board meets Thursday May 10 to decide if Hyde Park becomes a conservation area. A $200000 federal appropriation funds planning. If approved, Mayor Daly appoints a 9 to 15 member council of neighborhood residents to work with agencies on the urban renewal project from 47th to 59th streets Cottage Grove to the Lake. The council must include at least 50 percent property owners. Submittal then goes to city council for approval and finally to Washington for federal clearance.
James McDonald, 24, an ex soldier, terrorized Hyde Park Kenwood last year with thefts and lewd acts. He was sentenced May 1 to seven years to life in Illinois State Prison by Judge Daniel Roberts after being apprehended October 21 by detectives Bruce Jeffray and James McCarthy. He was indicted for five counts of robbery and lewd acts following identification by ten residents.
The 4th annual Open Meeting of the South East Chicago Commission is moved to Monday May 21 at 8 p.m. in Manuel Hall. Mayor Richard J. Daley joins public officials including Commissioner George Ramsey and Lloyd Johnson, Timothy O Connor, and Ross Humphrey. The session focuses on Chicago renewal programs and community improvements led by the mayor and commissions. Continued on page 2.
