Eight Hyde Park churches from six denominations join a nationwide program on Sunday May 8 for The Observance of Consultation on Church Union. The event marks a shared pulpit exchange to promote interdenominational dialogue.
Youth in Government participants including Sarah Gray Janet Thomas and Kathy Dickson prepare final bills with help from Rep. Mikva and Rep. Mann before traveling to Springfield for the YMCA sponsored program. Local pastors schedule sermons at Hyde Park churches around 11 00 a m focusing on unity ecumenism and church life.
Seven Burnham Committee members were convicted of defacing trees in Jackson Park and fined 50 dollars each. They plan an appeal arguing First Amendment free speech rights outweigh the Park District ordinance. Prosecutors said the act violated the ordinance despite a shared moral aim.
Richart Newhouse, Democratic candidate for the Illinois State Senate, releases a statement detailing his views on civil rights housing education credit reform and public aid. He argues for disciplined party loyalty but says constituents determine whether he remains liberal or conservative and supports Abner Mikva for Congress. He faces incumbent Nathan Kinnally.
State Representative Robert Ek Mann of 5539 Harper announces full support for Governor Kerner as he pushes to repeal the Loyalty Oath for state employees and political candidates. He calls the oath a McCarthy era hysteria tool and asserts it undermines public trust and dignity.
A Hyde Park Kenwood Community Conference walk in Jackson Park drew around a hundred people braving cold winds. The group toured areas near the Perennial Garden and crossed the new Cornell Drive concrete led by George Overton.
