G Marie Leaner a 25 year old second year Loyola law student from Dorchester 2012 announced she will run as an independent for state representative in the 24th District to replace Calvin Smith who died weeks after a Democratic primary loss. She is circulating petitions needing about 2700 signatures with an 8 percent submission cap and campaigns while working two jobs. Her supporters include Al Raby William Cousins and Timuel Black. A Citizens for Leaner Committee is forming.

New Middle School Proposed for Old Kenwood Building
A preliminary long range plan for Chicago Public Schools proposes using the old Kenwood School building at Seth and Blackstone for a new regional middle school. Dr. Donald Leu of Michigan State University recommends regional middle schools and magnet facilities, with several oldest elementaries phased out by 1975. Completion of the new high school at Kenwood is slated for September 1969, construction ahead of schedule.
