Compromise Sought on 47th Place Land Use by CCC
The Conservation Community Council pressed Ancona School and Lake Village to work out a compromise over land on the south side of 47th Place or the CCC would decide. Edwin Rothschild asked DUR official David Larson to meet with school reps and developers before the March 20 CCC meeting. Louis Silverman of the Ancona School cited a 40 000 square foot expansion need, while Lake Village urged regard for HR 1 site plans and the potential impact on a new high rise. The DUR and Hyde Park Kenwood Conference favor adding 47th Place to urban renewal sites. the 47th Place plan was shown to the CCC on February 4. The CCC will meet at least every third Wednesday through June 1968, as the official community arm of Urban Renewal.

District 14 reorganizes administration under Dr. Melnick
Dr. Curtis Melnick becomes associate superintendent in charge of Area A schools for District 14. The Area A office operates from Hyde Park High School. Miss Margaret Clyne remains acting superintendent of District 14 and leads District 22. Hyde Park Kenwood and most Woodlawn schools lie in District 14, while District 22 covers South Shore.

Ray School Principal to Be Transferred to Central Office
Ray School principal Frank Gardner will be transferred March 1 to an administrative post in the central offices of the Board of Education. He becomes assistant to the board of examiners, a promotion with a higher salary, while Ray prepares for a new principal at the Board meeting today. Gardner is the city’s only Negro principal at an integrated school and led Ray after PTA controversies over ability grouping and segregation. The six through eighth grade Bay attendance includes Hyde Park and Woodlawn students. two months ago Gardner proposed Title III funds for an independent learning center at Ray, a plan whose fate remains unclear with his departure.

Plans for Southwest Hyde Park redevelopment to be presented
The Neighborhood Redevelopment Commission will hear plans Wednesday March 6 at 3 p.m. in City Hall 10th floor conference room. The University of Chicago owns the site between Cottage Grove and Drexel, 55th and 56th, and proposes student housing and related facilities.
