CCC To Meet Tonight On Urban Renewal Plan

The Community Conservation Council will hold a public meeting tonight at 7 30 in the Neighborhood Club. Edwin Rothschild says the Department of Urban Renewal plan amendments and the Alport buildings on 53rd Street will be the main topics. Also on the agenda are Canyon relocation concerns between Ellis and Drexel and 47th 48th streets modular homes at 50th and Blackstone and 47th Place Bryson Hotel owner Joseph Ticktin is expected to speak.

Community Conference to Form Pollution Subcommittee

Hyde Park-Kenwood Community Conference considers creating a subcommittee to draft position statements on water pollution and resource management. George Leposky chairs, invites residents to join. Focus includes bond issues, a proposed state natural resources department, and local Sanitary District industrial surcharge plans.

Kenwood School Plans Face Overcrowding and Reuse

District 14 leader Dr. Donald Blyth reports on policy choices for Kenwood Elementary as Shoesmith remains crowded and Hyde Park High faces possible closing. The Kenwood building may host a middle school or serve as temporary space if Hyde Park closes, with PTA and community groups weighing authority and timing. A next advisory session is planned in a few weeks.

Alport building dispute extends as tenants stay

A court hearing before Judge Franklin Kral on February 11 heard that 16 residents remain in the Alport buildings at 1500 to 1506 East 53rd Street while the Harper address at 5237 to 5239 Harper was vacated. The judge allowed continued occupancy for the ground floor shops’ caretaker with strict limits and postponed further sale negotiations with the Department of Urban Renewal until May 7.

Cornell Village Tops Out 27 Story Building In Frigid Weather

The 20,000 pound chiller unit was raised to the top of the 27 story Cornell Village building last week to symbolize its topping out. The complex will include 18 townhouses alongside the high rise and should be completed this spring. Architect Ezra Gordon of East View Park designed the project.

YMCA fundraiser kicks off 1969 drive for Hyde Park and citywide programs

The Near South District YMCA starts its 1969 campaign with a February 20 luncheon at the YMCA Hotel 826 South Wabash. Chairman John R. Montgomery III of Lakeside Bank leads a drive targeting 172000 dollars to expand youth and senior programs including 1000 campers from Robert Taylor Homes and the Mobile Service.
