Lighting Ceremony Launches Hyde Park Boulevard Illumination

Mercury vapor lights on Hyde Park Blvd were activated at a ceremony with Chicago Park District officials and civic leaders. Aldermen Despres and Holman attended with other politicians and university and community representatives to celebrate the new street lighting extending from Cottage Grove toward 57th Street.

More Policemen For H P Station

Twenty six additional police men were assigned to the Hyde Park and Woodlawn districts during December. Since Oct 1 a total of 82 police men have been added to the two districts with 10 in October 19 in November and 13 in December. The Woodlawn force was increased by 10 in October 17 in November and 13 in December. All new officers are recent graduates of the Police Training school and most have been trained to ride three wheel motorcycles.

Levi Urges Private Funds for Hyde Park Kenwood Renewal

Levi told the Chicago Community Conservation Board that public funds will underwrite 20 percent of the Hyde Park Kenwood renewal, with private action covering 80 percent if mortgage credit is available. He noted FHA guarantees and cited broker exclusions, adding the project will repay public investment in 10 to 15 years as a model for city conservation efforts. Harry Joseph praised the board’s coordination with park district and schools.

Conference on Restrictive Business Practices at UChicago

An international conference on Control of Restrictive Business Practices will be held January 13 to 16 at the University of Chicago. About 70 participants including government officials businessmen attorneys and economists are invited. There will be closed discussions and four public sessions with officials of foreign governments discussing their countries' policies.

Residents Press Budget Hearing For Chicago Schools

Local representatives pleaded for relief from half day sessions and for funds to remove double shifts for 28 000 students. Supt Willis estimated 21 million needed to end double shifts. PTA groups cited repairs lighting plumbing and safety hazards plus playground deficits and concerns of segregation in school boundaries.
