Hyde Park Herald reports a second building rising on the lot at 5430 Cornell amid a long history of code violations. Florence Stein owns both structures. the Lynden Apartments once housed up to 19 units with illegal basement rooms and poor conditions. The Hyde Park Kenwood Community Conference pressed for action since 1963 but records remain incomplete.
Hyde Park residents on the 5400 block of Cornell pressed the Community Conservation Council on illegal overnight parking at a vacant corner lot at 55th and Cornell. They urged turning the lot into a parking facility amid new high rises and limited space. The DUR discussed selling the land to Streets and Sanitation, then leasing to a private firm, with plans seen at nearby sites. Officials weighed who would run the venture, while DAR would study feasibility. In other business, Robert Howard reported union financing issues for a 47th Street housing site and promised an update at the next meeting.
Alderman Leon Despres highlights Hyde Park parking woes and a shift in Urban Renewal policy. The memo notes illegal past parking on cleared lots, proposes non profit lease operation to keep lots clean, and warns tickets will begin April 21 for violations.
