Bryson Hotel to Be Demolished in Hyde Park

Wreckers will begin demolishing the Bryson Hotel at 4932 Lake Park Ave within ten days, per Tom Finerty Southeast area coordinator for the city’s Department of Urban Renewal. Most tenants are elderly or on limited incomes and have vacated. Some moved to other Hyde Park apartment hotels. others left the community, says Bob Adams co-director of the Hyde Park Kenwood Community Conference.

Kenwood grad wins Urbana council seat

Susan Bekenstein a 20 year old Kenwood High School graduate and University of Illinois social service junior won an Urbana Illinois city council seat as a Democrat. She is the first undergraduate and first non local to win the post. She previously worked on Abner Mikva district advisory board and led voter registration efforts. Her parents reside at 5201 S Cornell. Hyde Parker mayor Paul Soglin won Madison Wisconsin mayoral race with backing from UW.

Local stores hit by nationwide meat boycott

A survey of Hyde Park Co-op A P and other outlets shows meat sales plunging by 25 to 70 percent last week. Some stores report strong gains in fish and poultry with Jesersons fish market up about 40 percent as demand outpaces supply.
