Beadle county 1906 county commissioner session notes

Official records from the March 1906 Beadle County board of commissioners show salaries for January and February, numerous petty disbursements, and votes on tax reductions for Hitchcock and other items. The minutes record adjournments, bridge and courthouse matters, and bids for tax books. Local notices include cattle inspector selection and a memorial obituary for J. H. Miller.

Dipping Gas Case Heads to State Supreme Court

The cattle dipping case ends with a permanent injunction in favor of cattle owners and farmers. The state livestock commission appeals to the state supreme court after a temporary injunction last summer. Crawford and Taylor represent plaintiffs while T H Null, acting state attorney, prepares the appeal for the state commission. Farmers plan to raise funds for the final hearing.

Young Man Dies of Typhoid Pneumonia at 28

Guy M. Sweet died Monday March 5 at age 28 from typhoid pneumonia after an illness. The death notice lists minimal details and notes the funeral arrangements are pending.

Missionary Convention to Draw Large South Dakota Gathering

The Methodist Episcopal Church in South Dakota plans a March 28 to 30 convention in Huron under the open door commission. Leaders from abroad including Dr. F H Wright and Mrs. F D Gamewell, plus bishops from New York and Chicago, will speak as delegates discuss evangelization home and foreign fields. The event features a prominent missionary exhibit and up to forty addresses, with hall seating limited to delegates.

Prof. W. H. Manuel former superintendent of Huron city schools arrived for a brief stay in the city and is noted to be now in business in Minneapolis.

Hubbard released on bonds for second trial in Cakebread case

H L Hubbard, accused of shooting W G Cakebread in the county a year ago last June, is out on $5000 bonds awaiting a second trial ordered by the state supreme court. Court sets next Tuesday. defense may seek another continuance to the fall term depending on the term. The Supreme Court granted a new trial on an error to the preceding charge.

Evangelists Smith and Holden Hold Meetings in Watertown

Evangelists Smith and Holden, who conducted union religious services in this city last year, are staging a new round of meetings in Watertown. Smith was detained in a Minnesota town by snow blockades. Rev. J. P. Anderson of the Huron Presbyterian church preached the first sermon, using Exodus chapter 32 verse 26 to urge the audience to take the Lord’s side.

An 1 Tramp on the Road Draws Sturdy Applause

The on the road drama titled An 1 Tramp delights audiences with a four act presentation. The show runs for about two and a half hours and is booked for Monday March 12.
