Defeat in Somaliland Patrol Ends in Colonel Plunkett Killed

War dispatches report a British force led by Colonel Cobbe reconnoitering near Gumburru Somaliland. Colonel Plunkett with 160 KA R and 48 Sikhs faced a strong element, was overwhelmed, with only 37 escapees among his men.

Mullah Defeated Near Gumburu In Somaliland Clash

Brigadier General Manning relieved Colonel Cobbe after a battle near Gumburu fifty miles west of Galadi. About 2,000 Mullah horsemen and 10,000 spearmen faced Colonel Plunkett's detachment on April 7. British losses were heavy with 170 officers and men killed. Somalis suffered large casualties. The Mullah's force reportedly ranged 3,000 to 4,000 mounted and about 80,000 foot. details remain scarce.

Great Northern Trainsmen Reach Impasse Over Schedule
