Higgins the frontier defender of Illinois dies in Fayette County
Lieut Journay and twelve men garrisoned a block-house near Greenville to guard settlers from Indians. On August 31 1814 Higgins single handedly repelled a seventy to eighty strong ambush until rescued by Mrs Pursley and fellow rangers. Wounded multiple times he killed the lead attacker, lost two balls, and later recovered alone. Higgins lived as a frontier icon and once served as Illinois House of Representatives doorkeeper.
