Rough and Ready Club formed in Ridgefield Township 1848
At the Ridgefield Township Rail Road Hotel a Whig meeting formed the Rough and Ready Club to back General Taylor for the Presidency. E. B. Perkins was elected president with a body of twelve vice presidents and a secretary. Members vow to canvass districts, record voters, and push Taylor while urging poll integrity to secure Whig votes on election day. The group planned to publish proceedings and adjourn to the next meeting.

Whig Campaign Notes and Taylor Support Movements
The piece surveys Taylor’s strong cross state support, especially in Kentucky and Pennsylvania, and forecasts large margins. It notes patronage shifts, Governor Shunk’s resignation context, and convention positions with J. R. Osborn and G. T. Stewart promoting campaign meetings across towns. It also covers Delano’s stance on Taylor versus Cass and public meetings in Ohio and Massachusetts boosting Taylor’s standing.
Pennsylvania Whigs Win Big in Keystone State
The New York Tribune notes no doubt of Whig victories in Pennsylvania with Governor Johnston elected and a sweeping lead in Congress and Legislature. It recounts a dramatic, near unanimous Whig surge aided by official patronage and strong public confidence, despite early doubts and a record turnout.
