Beav er Island Mormons and their Mormon valley colony
A 19th century report details Beaver Island and Garden Island in Lake Michigan as Mormon strongholds led by James Strong with hundreds of settlers, ships, a steam sawmill, and plans for a Tabernacle. It describes abundant timber, inland fisheries, land grants, and strong religious beliefs including polygamy. A Salt Lake City and Provo valley account extols the Mormons as industrious, hospitable, and expanding toward a separate dominion while noting their political stance and future potential impact on the nation.
