Opium Trade Dazzles with Emperors Power in China
Readers are informed of a panorama of 19th century events including election talk in Philadelphia and a Whig victory in Erie county. The piece touches on the Locofoco party’s stance, the Pennsylvanian political scene, and the broader mood of reform, with notes on public works and toll policies. It mentions an Emperors power move in China suppressing opium, a dire crackdown with the state authorizing a high official to enforce limits, and a fiscal tally of opium seized, valued at 15 million dollars.
