Tax List Personal Property Figures Show Taxable Values

The State Journal publishes a table from the Auditor of State on 1844 1845 and 1846 valuations for horses cattle hogs and sheep and for merchants stock and credits. Hogs and sheep were not valued in 1846. Aggregate horse and cattle values fall from 20 6 million in 1844 to 13 8 million in 1846 with hogs and sheep added, while merchants stock and credits rise to 22 28 million in 1846. Some counties did not return values and were estimated, suggesting overall valuation may be too low but confirms farmers and cattle owners bear most taxation responsibility.
