The Alton Mob Attack and Mayor Krum's Account
A detailed eye witness report by JOAN M. KRUM, mayor, recounts a chaotic hour as a mob surrounded the warehouse, fired on defenders, and tore the press from the building. Reverend E P Lovejoy was shot, others wounded, and eventually the crowd dispersed with the press destroyed and property saved in part. The piece argues for the supremacy of law and the dangers to liberty of the press under mob rule.
