Madison's Letter on federalism and state rights doctrine
In a 1830 Montpelier letter, editor of the North American Review discusses the Virginia resistances of 1798 99 and the constitutional balance between state and federal power. It argues the United States government is a union of states with shared sovereignty and warns against a state level nullification or unilateral appeal against federal laws.
