National Convention backs Pacific rail line across the continent
The St Louis convention of railroad advocates met with 464 delegates across states including Missouri and Illinois to map a trunk railroad to the Pacific. Resolutions urge immediate action by Congress, designating a pass near Arkansas and Del Norte, with troops and land grants to support settlement and telegraph lines. Benton opposed the plan, sparking political clashes, while Col. Fremont’s letter urged avoiding Rocky Mountain routes. The Memphis convention followed with calls for cross-continental routes and isthmian options debated.
