In Norwalk Ohio a young woman Caroline Collins elopes with a fortune hunter Collins, spurning her father Mr Warren. After years of abuse and neglect, she returns home in a storm to seek forgiveness, falls ill, and dies after her father and stepmother take her in. The tale warns that sowing the whirlwind reaps the storm.
A neighbor recounts a man drawn into sewing societies fairs and lotteries, spending seven dollars on a night of distraction. He returns home broke, lamenting the losses and warning of the dangers of charitable gatherings and social schemes.
