The text parodies political factions, hints at a district mislabeling, and ends with a chaotic aside about market phrases and a startled reaction to mice. The readable portion preserves the political satire tone and period voice.
A Quaker Toby, protecting his daughter Mary, is robbed by a masked highwayman who takes a two hundred pound purse. The Quaker outsmarts the thief, retrieves the money, and uses the ransom to secure a future wedding. Edward Wersford, Mary's lover, learns of Toby’s ruse and earns his father’s respect through a moral compromise, leading to a peaceful resolution and a planned inheritance.
In Raleigh April 17 1844 Mr Clay addresses readers of the National Intelligencer explaining why he delays comment on Texas annexation. He notes lack of public support for annexation, reports of a treaty prepared for Senate, and cites prior treaties and territorial boundaries as context. He argues annexation should proceed with broad national backing and restraint on concessions, reflecting on past Florida tradeoffs and the Sabine to Red River boundary.
