The Feb 15 1836 dispatch from Washington reports Britain has received France’s note accepting mediation to settle differences with the United States. France says the President’s recent message removed honor-related obstacles and is ready to pay the indemnity instalment when claimed. Britain, calling itself a common friend, hopes for amicable termination and restoration of friendly relations between the US and France.
The secretary of state reports Mr Bankhead's note that Britain has informed of France's willingness to support mediation and pay the American indemnity when claimed. Senate leaders discuss the peaceful settlement, caution in language, and dangers of prior administration actions, praising Britain's role and urging prudent handling of funds.
President expresses sincere regret for past erroneous impressions on France and notes fulfillment of a convention between governments will remove the differences. Both nations share common interests and the aim is to restore ancient ties of friendship. From the Albany Daily Advertiser and Richland Whig an account chronicles General Harrison and his troops near Prophetstown on November 6. It details cautious negotiation, reconnaissance, and a sunrise march to secure a favorable encampment amid Native forces and looming attack.
