Sub-Treasury debate portrayed as exclusive metallic currency

The article critiques a Senate January 1840 debate where Benton and Van Buren allies push to strike out monetary reception for a sub-treasury and favor an exclusive metallic currency. It contrasts Cuba’s low-cost labor and capital under a silver standard with American high costs, warning that free institutions risk collapse under royal governance.
