Shower of ashes from a volcanic eruption narrows mindanao voyages

A memo in Silliman's Journal reports Rev Peter Baker aboard the Niantic from Canton describing a Neptune ash shower near Mindanao on April 12 to 17. The ash obscured the moon and stained decks, and Ear lier the Margaret whaler noted similar ash near 300 miles north northeast. The note suggests a recent volcanic eruption in the area and records the ship’s discovery of ash on the decks and eyes.
