Fragments on the United States Congress and Nation
A Knickerbocker Magazine sketch extols the United States Congress as a diverse cross section of regions from Tennessee to Missouri and beyond. The narrator travels through the West and East, praising the union’s breadth and imagining a shared destiny under one flag. A concluding quip contrasts merchants’ bills with birds’ bills.
