An Ithaca Journal report details a disastrous descent along the Ithaca and Owego railroad incline. Eleven passengers were aboard when brakes failed at the upper engine house, sending the car speeding toward the lower incline. Passengers leaped or were thrown from the car as it plunged, with one man killed or mortally injured and another seriously wounded. Medical aid arrived promptly amid wreckage described as a bomb-like ruin. Hon. Amasa Dana was among those who leaped to escape. A Patriot letter describes a dry acid and alkali method to make bread rise without yeast. By rubbing tartaric acid into dry flour and later adding alkali, the loaf supposedly bakes light and tasty with any flour. Proponent, a baker, claims healthful, universally useful bread achievable using tar taric acid or saleratus.
In 1809 June 7 the House adopted a resolution directing the Secretary of the Treasury to draft a plan to protect and foster U S manufactures, detailing existing establishments and progress. Southern Atlantic states largely supported it, including Virginia North Carolina South Carolina Georgia. Now these states denounce protection as unconstitutional and advocate free trade. The Peoria Register recounts a goose drive of 1150 birds crossing the ferry from Rockville Indiana toward Henry county Iowa. They travel 10 to 14 miles daily, with two owner horses, consuming about six bushels of corn. Starting with 1200, roughly 50 fainted and were sold en route.
