A farmer in Cheshire recalls a life of crime and pursuit as he shelters in an inn guarded by a loyal dog. The dog’s strange affection reveals a hidden den of thieves, a trap beneath the bed, and the farmer’s narrow escape with captors captured by search of the inn. The tale closes with the dog’s loyalty restored and the farmer vowing honesty.
