The Male in My Pocket and the Slackwater Misfortune
A humorous tale in which a man loses a half dollar and then other coins as his wife, Mrs Slackwater, keeps urging thrift. The expense worsens into poverty, with the narrator reflecting on pockets, a pantaloons change, and a subscription plea for an orphan asylum hinting at broader hardship. The piece closes with his wife’s quiet insistence on duty and frugality amid declining means.

Charity and household economy in a shared Exeter circle
An account combines social visits with talk of Ned Bowen’s income and frugal living, followed by a parable from an African chief and a medical note. A London observer recalls a surgical success in Exeter, where Mr Packer operated on Tucker for a lung abscess, removing about a quart of pus in minutes and signaling hopeful recovery.
