Slavery debate shapes church unity and policy

In Cincinnati a report outlines three memorial classes on slavery and a debate on whether slaveholding is a sin. The General Assembly of the United States Presbyterian Church declines ecclesiastical discipline for slaveholding, urges peacemaking with slaveholders, and cautions against schism between North and South. It calls for humane treatment and religious instruction for slaves and notes efforts by slaveholding ministers to expand grace. The assembly rejects abolishing slavery by church law, while urging reform of unjust laws and a broader missionary approach.
