Sometime between 1812 and 1813 a Yankee at a St Johns customs office challenged officers with wit and threats over a passport hat. He refused to remove his hat, threatened with fists and a bat, then demanded the hat be placed properly on his head before departure. A Missouri legislator recount describes a hunting-knife display and rowdy crowd as he asserts his seat and ridicules rivals.
