Fragmentary verse ponders seven year spans from childhood schooling to later life. It traces stages of youth, apprenticeship, love, business toil, and wasteful pursuit, ending with a mystifying, unresolved note on death and destiny.
In Alvarado Mexico a group plotted crime in a dingy hideout. William Hardick leads Hawks and Manson plotting to steal church treasure from a convent vault using a trusty key and a hidden den as their retreat After plotting the heist they eagerly plan to seize gold and silver candle-sticks and plate for safekeeping in the Haunted Den.
Morning reveals Alvarado’s rough harbor scene with ships and boats as the Haunted Den rises on a sheer cliff. Nearby stands the ivy–grown Convent of St Michael flanked by barren mountains and mossy walls.
Hardick and his men plan to loot St Michael Convent for its gold. They attack monks, tie Hardick, rescue a girl, and ignite the convent. Ferdinand and Maria flee to Bonee Castle to marry, while Ned Crippen and Father Christopher seek revenge. Hawks and Manson are mortally wounded, and Hardick is killed by Mexican brigands.
