A Tale of Indiana and a Murderous Gambler Emigrant

Charles Gray, a New York tobacco speculator ruined by avarice, moves with his wife Mary to a cabin near the Ohio in Indiana. Gray murders fellow traveler George Somers for a fortune, hides the body, and is later brought to ruin when Somers’s companion Wilson uncovers the murder and Gray falls from a precipice. The tale ends with Gray’s death and his victim’s bones left in the basin below.

Indian Massacre at Green Chairs Farm in Florida Territory

In July near Tallahassee Florida a settler named Mr Green Chairs and his wife and six children faced an attack by Indians described as Kuchins. Mrs Chairs was killed, the house burned, several children escaped, and a seventeen year old girl narrowly avoided capture before hiding. Pursuit by vigilants followed but heavy rain halted the chase. a local paper notes the incident alongside a grotesque panorama on Royal Street and a political rant about Van Buren policies.
