Agatha daughter of M Boulanger in Rouen is pressured to marry Jacques Frisonnier the town barber. An apprentice Annibal Visa pour loves Agatha and plans to wed her, while Frisonnier boasts he will shave gratis for the crowd before the wedding. A stranger who demands a shave for free exposes a cloven hoof, fulfilling Frisonnier's rash vow and sealing the lovers fate. Agatha and Annibal are later laid to rest. Frisonnier remains condemned to his endless task.
