Senator MecDuffie Urges Compromise on the 49th Parallel
In a senate address on the Oregon question he argues for compromise or war, warning Britain will yield no more than the 49th parallel and forecasting a $100 million annual cost of war. He notes Southern defenders of slavery would risk conflict for cotton interests but favor peace if stakes are small. The journal predicts a proffered notice and negotiated settlement.
