In 1836 candidates Bebb and Elijah Vance sought the Senate from Butler and Preble counties. Whigs faced a general defeat as Van Buren and Harrison led statewide results while Baldwin and Vance trailed for governor and senate respectively. In Preble Bebb posted the highest Whig majority ever, despite the ticket losses.
