Speech on the Sunieice of the Late Defalca tions in Fort Wayne Case

In a December 1833 House speech Mr Wise reports on the Fort Wayne land office receiver John Spencer. He cites treasury letters demanding prompt deposits and monthly returns, alleges neglect and money shavings, notes West’s 1836 inquiry revealing a large balance and mismanagement, and condemns Woodbury for delaying action and tolerating irregularities. He recounts Swartwout’s later defalcation and asserts political obstruction to accountability.

Dream and mischief mix with social life at Deacon’s shop

An 1939 diary fragment from Conn describes dreamlike humor and moral tension in a small town, with a tale of a deacon, a gulp of gin, and a mischievous tale about a catlike tail. It notes York City’s public schools and 17 000 pupils, plus 20 000 children aged under fifteen not receiving instruction.
