Democratic governor candidates to debate in Humeston

Wayne County will host a joint appearance of all four Democratic Iowa gubernatorial hopefuls at the Humeston Livestock Auction on May 21 at 7 p.m. The Wayne County Democratic central committee cooperates with Decatur and Clarke counties. Participants include Lt. Gov. Robert Anderson Clinton Berryhill former Sen. Lowell Jenkins and Sen. George Kinley. Moderator is U.S. Senate hopeful John Roedrick. Local candidates Gary Hughes and others are expected to attend. Light refreshments and candidate chats planned. Joy Loney and Sue (last name truncated) co chair the county party.

DPI mini evaluation topic of special meeting Wednesday

The Department of Public Instruction conducts a mini evaluation today and tomorrow at Mormon Trail Schools and calls a special board meeting for Wednesday. Dennis Modlin requests funding to replace dangerous volleyball supports at $950 plus transport and install costs. The board will seek installation cost estimates and notes gym floor constraints before July sealer and season ticket plans. Principal Hoover pitches weighted grades to expand scholarships for students in advanced coursework.

Head Start pupils wrap up year with picnic and tours

Humeston Head Start children close the school year with a Corydon picnic and visits to Patchwork Puppets and the Iowa Air National Guard. They toured Des Moines sites, met teacher Kathy Teel, and viewed animals at Clarke County farm while planning fall math and science courses. A disciplinary review and board actions covered milk and bread bids, with incoming Supt. Richard Dexter set to take over.

Humeston MT class selects commencement speakers and honors

The Humeston Mormon Trail class of 1986 will hold baccalaureate and commencement at 2 p.m. on Sunday May 18 in Humeston. Rev. Blair Walters will give the invocation and address. Speakers include Mark Ripperger Allen Goben Jodi Heston and Sue Ann McCann as honor graduates. Scholarships come from multiple local groups and families. The concert band directed by Warren Heilman will perform Elgars Pomp and Circumstance and Swearingen Invicta with a recessional by Playbar. Poppy Day Observed Across Humeston Area Saturday

Humeston volunteers from the American Legion Auxiliary distribute pop pies and promote wearing a Poppy on Poppy Day. The annual program since 1924 honors veterans and raises funds to aid those who served, urging communities to show they have not forgotten and care.

Garden Grove to Host Black Powder Rendezvous Weekender

Garden Grove opens a three day black powder rendezvous May 24 to 26 with an 11 a.m. lunch at the fire station on Saturday followed by a noon parade and a 1 p.m. volleyball tournament. Carnival games run 2 to 5 p.m. and a 9 p.m. dance caps Saturday. Sunday features an all-school reunion and outdoor church service with a 2 p.m. reunion roll call and a Memorial Day Lions Club dinner at the school cafeteria on Monday.

Branson trip for Garden Grove seniors after year end

Seniors from Garden Grove wrap up the year with a final day of classes then a baccalaureate rehearsal. Several juniors head Sunday to a senior trip to Branson Missouri chaperoned by Lamar Pearson Charlie Horton and others. They plan to return Wednesday with awards set for May 20 at 9 a.m. in Garden Grove gym.

Vernon Brown is Wayne County's chief deputy sheriff again after Sheriff Gilbert Sanders named him to the post he held under former Sheriff Jerry Street. The Iris Society hosts its annual show at Humeston Community Center on May 17 with 49 specimen classes and an artistic division for iris and peony arrangements. Cash prizes will be awarded in both specimen and arrangement categories. new classes by colors and the theme Summer Melodies will guide entries. Specimens should be named if possible.

SueAnn McCann of Derby wins a $1200 Honor Scholarship from the American Institute of Business. She will study at AIB this fall for an associate degree with a court reporting major, having graduated Mormon Trail High School in 1986 and ranking in the top 10 percent or with strong ACT scores.
