Box makers urge standard lumber boxes to cut waste

The Spokane Chronicle notes Washington apples require 12,909,000 boxes annually, each box using 4.3 board feet, totaling about 51,600,000 feet of lumber. A single mill running 100,000 feet daily cannot supply enough. Logs valued at 350,000 to 500,000 dollars enter is delivered, prompting box manufacturers to push standardization to reduce waste from 12 inch basis lumber and ripped narrow strips.
