In Richman township 93 ballots cast in the statewide primary on Monday with 54 Republican and 39 Democratic. The vote showed no major contests as war news dominated attention. Wayne County lists nominees for county offices including Auditor A R Nicholson and Treasurer S E Hilliard among Republicans and others on the slate.

Montgomery, and Harry Henry’s colt. Water carried cattle down the West branch of Chariton east of Corydon. Cement bridge at Gump schoolhouse washed away, along with a culvert on the Rock Island west of Kniffin, delaying rail traffic. Large hail reported.
Joseph Bailey aged 74 and a Cambridgeshire native died recently at his daughter Mrs. R A Sayers home in Des Moines He came to the United States at 18 and married Virginia Arnold on June 24 1870 Seven children were born from the union Known as Geese Joe he was noted as a hospitable and informed man Funeral services were held at the M E Church at High Point and burial followed in High Point cemetery
Detroit announces Iowa Ford car output cut to 1250 per month down from 2500 a year ago. Production has fallen from 3000 to 1500 cars per day recently. Many plants closed under similar orders have been turned over to the War Department.
The New Era received from M Margaret Henry an invitation to attend the Des Moines public schools commencement at the Coliseum on Thursday evening June 6. Margaret is a Humeston girl and a granddaughter of R Watts.
Humeston marked Memorial Day with tributes to fallen soldiers from Civil War to World War I and a present war. Garlands were laid on graves as the community honored veterans, mothers, wives, and sweethearts, with speeches by Ex-Senator J. M. Wilson and a Gettysburg address recital.
Mrs J R Elison and her two children from Wellsburg West Virginia arrived Thursday to spend the summer with her parents Mr and Mrs I C Morford and brother W C Morford in town.
The sixteenth annual convention of the Rebekah lodges of district No. 93 will be held at the I O O F ball in Lineville on Friday. Afternoon and evening sessions feature addresses, readings, music, and a dinner at 6 p m. Contingent speakers include W F Leech Humeston and Miss Fannie Williams Humeston with Jennie Lane president and Izola Scott secretary.
Miss Emilie Blackmore Stapp, book and literary editor of the Des Moines Capital, completed a remarkable fund raising effort by securing one million pennies for France and Belgium war orphans. Donations sped in from Des Moines and Iowa children through drives, concerts, and various penny collections, surpassing the goal as March 30 passed.
The food administration clarified sauerkraut is of Dutch origin not German. Those who eat it freely are performing a patriotic service by promoting cabbage use and saving staple foods needed abroad.
Miss Olive Larson traveled to Des Moines on Monday to enter summer school at Highland Park college.

Private Harry W Sharpnack writes from the AEF about body lice, weather, and mud, noting trains of messages between Centerville and battalion HQ and minor battlefield nuisances and illnesses.

A telegram sent by Frank Vanderlip to Homer A. Miller, state director of the War Savings campaign, requests June 28 be Thrift Day. The appeal asks the American people to practice thrift by eliminating non essentials and investing the money in Thrift Stamps and Liberty bonds.
Yona will not receive anthracite this fuel season ending March 31, 1914. Fuel Administrator Charles Webster reports the hard coal embargo was issued to meet New England shortages. Iowa may shift to bituminous coal as many lack alternate heating, with 1916-17 usage near 500,000 tons and 1917-18 production projected at about 12.5 million tons if the embargo persists. The embargo also covers Nebraska and Missouri but not Wisconsin, Minnesota, or the Dakotas, which will get 7 to 20 percent of their 1916-17 intake.
C F Schnee driving a Mitchell with six young women skidded on a wet road and hit the bannister on a wooden bridge at I C Street west of town Friday evening. Miss Freda Greenlee and Miss Pearl Finch were slightly injured. others unhurt. The car was badly damaged as the group, returning from Cambria to Garden Grove after promoting the Womanhood film, turned back at the Rinkler place.
Mr and Mrs Marion Miller of Humeston boast three sons in the service. Claude, 21, registered a year ago, and others Mary Arthur Harry and Carl have enlisted to aid the war effort against Germany. The brothers contribute to victory as Free Men strive for peace.
As chairman I request each committee member to meet at 8 50 Friday evening in my wall paper room. We will plan one of the best parades in our city and seek ideas and suggestions from all attendees.
The executive committee of the Fourth of July arrangements will meet at the town hall on Friday evening at 30 dollars for the meeting.
