Fitting Tribute in Humeston Remembers Veterans

A large Humeston audience braved rain to honor veterans at the Opera House with a national colors decorated hall G A R Spanish American soldiers and Odd Fellows led a program featuring the Glee Club a recital by Hazel Rice and Lincoln Gettysburg address by Miss Inez Kelso and a Memorial address by Judge H M Towner of Corning The program closed with America and graves at the cemetery were decorated by veterans' remains pouring in the conclusion

Death of a Former Resident

Death notice for W. G. Frame formerly of Humeston and later Michigan. He died May 4 at his daughter’s home near Lewiston Michigan at about eighty years old. Born in Kentucky, he spent most of life in Iowa, lived in Humeston years, moved to Michigan five years ago. He left ten children including O. L. Frame who lives north of town. Local friends regret his passing.

A busi ness meeting of church members is planned for next Sunday morning after a short service. Trustees urge every member to attend due to important business to transact at the Congregational church.

Iowa Hogs and Corn year at the Des Moines State Fair with a new swine pavilion under construction to showcase hogs and corn. Premiums for corn increased by 800 to over 1300, encouraging farmers statewide to request premium lists from Secretary J. C. Simpson and prepare now.

College Boy to Play Here Saturday with Ralph Riggs

Ralph Riggs, a young comedian just of age, headlines The College Boy on Saturday June 8. He has starred in Fire Maid and the Mummy and revived Flora dora in New York, with praised performances as Anthony Tweedlepunch and Tom in All the Forts of Home. The supporting cast comes from Fire, Silver Slipper, Florodora, and other musical comedies. The College Boy is billed as clean and free of unfavorable press early reviews.

Farmers Replanting After Cold May Weather

The past week of cool weather caused worms to attack growing corn and many farmers must replant fields especially in low places. May ended cold, resembling November, raising concern over timely corn planting and possible crop damage.

Judge H M Towner of Corning will be in Corydon July lath for a special term to hear Lineville bank failure cases. This term is part of the May term, not a separate session, as Judge Evans avoids adjournments to handle matters as they arise. Corydon Times notes the arrangement saves time for attorneys and the public. Charles Edwin Opp born July 10 1848 in McDonough County Illinois died May 23 1967 aged 57 10 13. He married Rebecca L Randolph March 18 1869 in McDonough and moved to Wayne County 1876. They had ten children, nine living: Laura Thomas Edwin Mollie Olmey Esti Sherman Merton Eunice, with Eunice in California. Mr Opp joined the M F E church at Cantbria by letter in 2582.

The College Bay a Comedy with Music Opens at Stanton Opera House

A three act college comedy with music titled The College Bay by Boyer and Lastie will be staged at Stanton Opera House on Saturday June 3. The cast features known musical comedy performers including Ralph Riggs and Ros Stillman fresh from Florodora success. Roosevelt plans westward visit to discuss the Mississippi River waterway project.

Warren L. Goss of the National G A R urges state departments and local posts to observe Flag Day on Friday the Sith day of fame marking the one hundred thirtieth anniversary of the flag. The annual G A R encampment in Iowa will be held in Dubuque from Tuesday June 11 to Saturday June 15. Arrangements promise the greatest encampment yet in the state. Women's Relief Corps and other allied groups will meet concurrently.

Burlington Employes Get Ten Percent Pay Increase

Official notice announces a ten per cent raise for a large group of Burlington workers not under the mileage schedule. All office staff freight clerks truckmen and bridgemen on lines east of the Missouri river gain the increment with next month’s payroll. Trainmen and engineers have already received increases. A pacing horse race pit tomorrow at 2:30 between D Murray and Frank Gardiner at Dr McCulloch’s track in the town’s south part.
