Humeston officials promote the Fall Festival as the town’s premier event this fall. Free high quality attractions are arranged for three days of wholesome amusement and recreation. Yeomen Day September 12, Home Coming Day September 13, Everybody's Day September 14 invite all to attend.
Four local businessmen traveled to Pella to assess a new railroad proposed to run from Waterloo southwest to Chariton, linking eight Iowa trunk lines. Subscriptions gathered in Chariton total $35,000 with no payment required until construction, boosting confidence the rail line will be built. Journal refers to possible ties to the Wabash or Milwaukee and notes Chariton’s strong interest in the project.
Trustees will mow roads needing the work to exterminate weeds and will give owners and renters preference. The rate is 50 cents per mile for one round and 1 dollar per mile for two rounds. Bert McCeiroen, Clerk.

In Kansas City last Thursday Judge T J Seehorn ruled Adams Express Co need not deliver C O D liquor shipments billed for Iowa points. The Iowa law, effective July 4, fines each express office $600 yearly and risks prison terms for neglectful agents. The company claimed fines exceed receipts and feared unreliable agents.
Old friends, Rev and Mrs Rice of Humeston, visited the News office after attending the assembly. Rice ran the Melvern Record years ago and later moved the office, joining a long career in both newspapers and preaching. Allerton Chautauqua ended its ninth annual session with solid attendance and satisfaction.
In the Tingley tournament the Reds opened with weak batting and pitching struggles. Hump Hineston earned twelve strikeouts for the Reds in a 16 to 1 loss, with Malloy and Lorimer sharing duties on the mound. Henry Has brouck finished the last part as the Reds showed little offense overall.
Rich Anderson pitched for Wile again St. Charlies last week winning 4 1. He struck out eighteen men in a dominant zone display. Only one hit allowed and three hits surrendered, with four walks and a two bagger plus a three bagger mentioned.
