Humboldt Park braces for a spooky invasion as an array of creatures including goblins clowns cowboys witches and spacemen are said to target the fieldhouse on All Hallows Eve according to informed sources.
Citywide crime reports show a 4.5 percent rise for the 10th period from Sept 14 to Oct 11, with increases in West-Northwest Side districts Fillmore Austin and Shakespeare. Despite property crime up 4.5 percent, serious crimes against persons fell 4.9 percent for the period. An accompanying piece describes Halloween preparations at the park including a two‑stage invasion by children, a parade, games and costume judging led by park officials.
Special services observe the 450th anniversary of the Reformation at Bethel Evangelical Lutheran church Hirsch and Springfield. German services at 9 am and English at 10 30 am on October 29 and November. Sunday children from Bethel Lutheran school will take part in the English service. A communion service is set for 7 30 pm that evening.
A Halloween party for children at Mozart Playground 3840 Armitage starts at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Supervisor Sheldon Wexler organized the event with community leaders and merchants' help. Prizes include best costumes, game winners, and a radio set for the guess closest to the seeds in the park pumpkin.
A new local organization claims the Organization of Northwest Communities is an unwanted force in the area. They point to meetings at Blackhawk and Kelvyn Parks with hundreds in attendance and criticize ONC’s October 29 Notre Dame High School session as an attempted congress of organizations.
Scouts Get Flags donates the American flag to the troop and adds an official Brownie flag. Leaders Mrs Donal Sarnecke Mrs Mary Sroka Nancy Fabis and Kathy Coleman accept the gifts at their pickup locations.
Nicholas Schmitz, vice chair of the Organization of Northwest Communities, invites individuals and groups to a 7 p.m. meeting October 29 at Notre Dame High School to decide if a permanent ONC should be formed. If approved, new committees will plan a community wide congress with officers, a constitution, and yearly issues for 1968.
North Crawford chamber of commerce recently funded and distributed 100 Chicago Police Junior Patrolman shirts to area youths. Sgt. William Howe presented the shirts to Richard Davis at a chamber meeting, with Earle Palmer and Roy Dimber among attendees.
Pioneer Bank officials announce a year long Block Beautiful contest defining a block as one block long with boundaries Central Park to the east Kostner to the west Augusta to the south and Palmer to the north. Entry blanks are at the Pioneer bank. registration closes May 1, 1968.
A Chicago Board of Education survey based on teacher observations reports white 41.5 percent, Negro 52.3 percent, Puerto Rican 4.3 percent, and other races in the city system as of Sept. 20. Districts show wide variation with Orr High School 72.3 percent white and 14.7 percent Negro, while several area elementary schools report near zero Negro enrollment and high white shares. Puerto Rican and other categories appear in several schools for the first time.
