Tens of thousands of West-Northwest Side seniors prepare for diplomas as nine high schools hold commencements over three days. Area Man Heads State Vet Group

Bernard Jacobson of 2451 North has been elected department commander of Illinois Military Order of the Purple Heart. A World War II veteran, he earned the Purple Heart and Bronze Star on April 42, 1945 with the 73rd Infantry in Germany and previously led Chicago MOPH Chapter 142. He is editor of the Purple Heart News and holds offices in DAV and VFW chapters.

Chicago-Kent Law to honor 38 graduates of class of 1917

Werbert T. Yuenger and 37 other members of the class of 1917 at Chicago-Kent College of Law will be honored today as part of the school’s 80th anniversary celebration.

Pictorial Series Wins 2nd National Award

Community Publications earned its 113th editorial award since 1947 as a pictorial series on an Austin death by own action attempt received honorable mention in the 1967 National Better Newspaper contest. Photographed by Richard Holman, the May 25 1966 layout placed second in spot news. Bruce Sagan will receive the NNA prize at the June convention in Richmond Virginia. The contest drew over 2,700 entries from 50 states and serves a 6,600-strong publisher and editor membership.

Activities At Humboldt Park Summer Program For Children

A summer of activities at Humboldt Park offers a six week day camp for 8 to 12 year olds and numerous programs. Sail boating for 10 to 15 year olds who pass swimming tests runs weekdays 8:30 to 5:30. Tennis, midget and junior baseball, Liberty and Connie Mack leagues, Stan Musial baseball, senior and intermediate softball, kitten ball, and swimming lessons fill weeks. Special events include Sunday concerts, Camera Day, Carnival Day, Junior Olympics, Bike Carnival, Water Carnival, Family Night and Baseball Award Night. The six week camp runs 9:30 to 4:00 with a $10 fee and drinks, a duffle bag, and planned trips to Cedar Lake and other parks.

St Philomena Gym Addition Planned

The St. Philomena grammar school at 4131 Cortland will gain a $240,000 multi use gym with roller skating capable wood floors and 1500 seat capacity in a new 100 by 125 foot wing. Construction bids open July 7 with completion hoped by year end. Parish seeks zoning variances for front yard, floor area, and off street parking.

Suellen Dibbern Dies Veteran 34th Ward Dem

Funeral services were held for Suellen H. Dibbern 73 of 1743 N Kimball, longtime 34th Ward Democratic precinct captain and 18 year county probation officer. She died Thursday. Services at Simon Peter Lutheran Church with interment Mt Emblem cemetery. Survived by daughters Bernice Zett Edna Farnum a sister Frieda Mayer two grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
