The 1967 Christmas Lighting contest by the Austin Business Council announces first place awarded to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Welters at 1419 N. Mayfield for a display featuring a Nativity scene.
Kelvyn Park High School’s ROTC drill team captured the city championship for the third straight year at the North Armory, defeating seven other teams from Chicago districts. Cadet Lt Col Harold Carlton led the unit, coached by Sgt Jerry Hogsdon, with Principal Dr Bernard A Quish praising the team’s 35 cadets as they face two more inspections for top city-wide ROTC honors.
Serious crimes against persons fell 1.6 percent year over year during the 12th four week period ending Dec 6, while index crimes rose 3.8 percent citywide. Fillmore Shakespeare and Austin districts posted notable increases, with citywide property crimes up 1.8 percent from the prior period and 33.5 percent over 1966.
Funeral services were held Monday for Mrs Esther Blustein wife of Sol Blustein owner of Blustein Clothing Co. Burial was in Westlawn cemetery. Mrs Blustein 83 died Friday in Columbus hospital at 2930 Sheridan. She is survived by husband three sons Arnold Joel and Marvin five sisters and two brothers. She was a past president of East Lyman chapter of the Organization for Rehabilitation Training and of the John F Kennedy chapter B nai B rith.
The Organization of Northwest Communities held its inaugural hearing at Kelvyn Park on December 12 with 190 attendees, 58 delegates, and 29 alternates from 26 groups. Residents debated youth problems, garbage, vacant stores on Armitage, and the Crosstown Expressway, urging a new study, public hearings, and neighborhood action.
Most North and Pulaski stores will remain open Sunday to give customers a chance for last minute Christmas items. The move targets shoppers seeking extended hours in the holiday rush.
Steven Dorfman of Kelvyn Park High School is selected as a violinist in the All City High School Orchestra. He will join the string section for the season, representing Chicago public schools.
Area churches on the West Northwest Side plan Christmas messages urging peace beyond race creed and color. Reverends and a Msgr. cite John 3 16 and the gift of Jesus Christ, urging worship and gift giving as reminders of faith and goodwill.
