City projects in council chambers will be completed by city employees while labor in the chambers will be performed by the Hubbard Jaycees as a community service.
Hubbard Kiwanis sixth annual horse show at Harding Park drew about 3000 spectators and 413 exhibitors, raising an estimated 3500 for scholarships band uniforms and underprivileged child funds. General Chairman Ralph Cooper praised the event as growing each year and the show to go to.
Leah DeSantis, Miss Ohio Teen, enjoyed her trip to the national Miss American Teenager pageant finals held in Sandusky Ohio with contestants from four states finishing as runners up. She won the Miss Ohio Teen title and represented Ohio in mid August competition. Leah traveled to New Jersey and New York City before missing early school days at Ursuline High as a senior. The Palisades Park event moved indoors to a New York studio due to rain and delays pushed the winner’s announcement to Friday morning. Leah and her parents returned to Hubbard by Friday night.
The Western Reserve Council of the Boy Scouts of America announces a 50th anniversary observance. An open house at the Scout Service Center and a recognition banquet at Packard Music Hall Wednesday October 1 feature a 5 30 p m start and a 6 30 p m banquet with tickets at 3 dollars. The center is located at 1662 Mahoning Ave Warren.
Hubbard Rotary Club will host a flea market as part of its annual Benefit Auction on Saturday Oct 11 at Hubbard High School Bus Garage Hall St. Morning session 10 am and evening session 7 30 pm. Proceeds go to Child Welfare and international service projects. Call Tom Cooksey at 534 5666 to contribute items. A lunch counter and bake sale will also be set up.
Hubbard Superintendent Loren Giblin reports smooth opening despite Reed and Hubbard High School construction. Total enrollment reaches 3,844, up 75 students, with most gains from Hubbard High School. Breakdowns: Chestnut Ridge 166, Reed 825, Roosevelt 971, Hubbard Junior High 607, Hubbard High School 1,275. First time district total exceeds 3,800.
Extensive interior remodeling at Hubbard Municipal Building creates two new second floor offices and four basement offices, with the Clerk of Council and Chamber of Commerce moving into basement space. The project reworks heating, wiring, and controls, salvages materials from the nearby Dollar Bank, and adds a Civil Defense storage and director’s room. The Jaycees panel tasks the council chambers, and the mayor notes cost-saving use of city staff.
Hubbard City Council endorsed a $600,000 community pool project to appear on the November ballot. The plan, modeled on Sandy Oregon, would use existing school facilities and operate with revenue from education classes and admissions. The Board of Education would tax Hubbard residents to fund construction and ongoing costs.
Hubbard Post Office, led by Officer in Charge S J Tucciarone, received a U.S. Treasury commendation for outstanding service to the School Savings Program. Elmer L. Rustad cited the office as an important ally promoting Savings Bonds and Stamps to area schoolchildren, with stamps available at all times and free albums. The program, in operation 28 years, teaches thrift and citizenship and supports youth savings habits.
Hubbard High School Band under William Moody travels Saturday September 13 to Kent State University for Band Day with 19 bands. About 120 musicians and chaperones ride by bus. two hour rehearsal, three numbers and a giant PEACE formation. Kent State faces Dayton University in the season opener at the new stadium. return trip around 7 p.m.
Hubbard High School juniors Debby Thon and Debbie Bretz spent three days at the Teenage Institute on Alcohol at Whittenberg University August 24 27. The event sponsored by Ohio health and liquor authorities focused on alcoholism with insights on drug issues, classroom discussions, and campus activities.
