HUBBARD The Board of Education moved to place a February levy of 12.9 mills to cover a projected 1.3 million deficit by 1987. Ten mills would fund debt payments while 2.9 mills restore programs and staff cuts. The measure requires a special election costing about 8,800 dollars for 22 precincts.
Hubbard The Harding Park Board pledges to rebuild the Kiwanis Band Stand after a fire two weeks ago they call vandalism. Fire officials say arson not ruled out. board tightens park security and closes after 9 p.m. to curb vandalism as it seeks funds to rebuild.
A National Weather Service report finds two errors in May 31 actions by the Youngstown Office. The key lapse was failing to mobilize trained spotters and ham radio operators after a tornado touched down in northern Trumbull County, with 24 killed along the path. A later computer and communications failure hindered warnings as the storm moved through Newton Falls and surrounding communities.
Hubbard area weather tests city sewer system after 17 days of rain. Justin Silvidi Street Supervisor and Robert Randall Utilities Supervisor say crews worked around the clock to prevent sewage backup. The Erie Street main line required pumping to avert overflow, and upgrades to the 32 year old interceptor are pending federal funds. Storm sewers in Charles and Lloyd Streets pose ongoing concerns, with vigilance by city crews and interdepartmental cooperation continuing through continued rain.
Hubbard National Children's Book Week ran November 11 17 with free bookmarks and events for all ages. Storytime for four and five year olds was held November 13. Children’s Librarian Sherry Ault will visit Roosevelt Elementary School to introduce them to book characters.
Hubbard residents may apply for the Home Energy Assistance Program through WTCSA representatives every Thursday from 1 to 4 PM at the township administration building on Mill Street. Applicants must provide income proof and fuel bills, with income limits by household size, and all forms go to the Columbus HEAP office.
