Teachers protest board hires over coaching bias
More than 50 upset teachers and parents walked out at a Hubbard- area board of education meeting on May 22. They criticized the hiring of five teachers while substitutes and coaching needs sparked dispute. Superintendent Clyde Metz said interviews were held and the best applicants chosen with one trainee in progress. A decision on a substitute position was initially denied then reversed, with board member Dutch Keenan the sole dissenter. The board hired Phillip Stevens, George Lanterman, Frank OBrien, Sue Pavlov and Michael Pearce, while coaching slot approvals remained pending.

Clyde Hulbert Florist at 6140 West Liberty sits at Route 304 and Bell Wick Road as a third generation family business. Founded by Hudson Hulbert in 1898, Clyde took over in the early 1920s and retired in 1960. Today owners Bill and Pearl Hulbert emphasize plants and flowers with gifts such as Fenton glass, Hummel items, music boxes and crystal. Bill, a 1942 Hubbard High School graduate, employs 10 to 15 seasonal workers, owns four delivery vans, and served in the Army during World War II.
